For you to prevent this from taking place, place your weaker hand's middle finger across the other strings.
Next you will want to learn to read and play 2 octaves from the guitar sheet music, one after the other, in the same sets. Be cautious not to move your fingers that are holding the notes (your weaker hand), as you move from one to the other octave. To learn this may need you to practice and will pay in the end as you learn the octaves.
Learning anything in guitar playing is possible in incremental steps. First you identify the octaves using guitar sheet music. Then you learn to place your fingers correctly to hit the 1st octave. After that you learn to play 2 octaves that are in the same string set, BACK TO BACK!! Finally, you play two octaves, BACK TO BACK!!, from different sets. This is performed by keeping your weaker hand's fingers terribly near to the strings while you move to the other octave, in the other string set. Again, this requires time to learn and practice galore, but you'll be pleased that you did.
